Reflux still design and discussion

CCVM cooling water and other questions

Postby PhillT » Sat Jan 31, 2015 12:40 pm

Is it better to feed the cooling water to the Reflux condenser, then into the Product condenser, or vis-versa,...or....is it better to have separate supply to each condenser?

Is it worth having a thermo well & thermometer on it, and if yes, where is the best place to mount it, given that the condenser has to slide up & down the column?

What is an ideal column length? I don't want bare minimum, but also don't want it up against the ceiling. (It will be 2",.. packed with scrubbers, running off a 30 Litre, 2kw boiler)

Thanks.

Hi Phill

Best place for the thermo on a regular VM is on the tee branch before the gate where it is shielded from reflux

However with the CCVM it will only give vapour take off temp - still handy

I would place it under the tee about an inch lower than the condenser at its lowest position. a shield or umbrella plate may be required to shield from falling reflux which can interfere with accurate vapour temp readings - this will give you head temp

As far as length 20 times diameter is a good start eg 40" with minute gains with height after. there will be no gain after 60"
shorter columns will work also however will require extra reflux. The longer the better

Thanks guys, separate H2O supply it is, and 40" or so works for me.

It is a modular CCVM : POT build.

I finished the POT section today and the shotgun:- :-D

No-one said how much fun it is doing the 2nd end of these things:- (I might have gone a different route if I had known) :angry-banghead:

I had boots on a couple of days ago Bluey, found out that with shorts, not a good idea when de-soldering.
At least with thongs I can swipe it off quicker. Too bloody hot for long trousers down here at the moment ;-)

CCVM = condenser controlled VM.

The reflux coil slides up and down. sliding fully down block the take off branch (full reflux) and by sliding the RC up in small increments, vapour is allowed to enter the take off branch.

Although they can be fiddly, they do without the expensive gate valve.
