A reflux condenser from stainless steel gas line

Postby toil » Mon Apr 06, 2015 5:46 pm

I made this a while ago for a 3" VM still. The coil is stainless steel gas line and the cold finger is 1/2" copper. I cut the brass fittings on the gas line off and soft soldered the copper and stainless together. I had to grind the copper down a touch to get it to fit inside the stainless tubing. It soldered up easily with the tight fit. The stainless is 1/2 diameter and very thin. Winding the coil is very simple. It manages to knock down all the vapor the two 2400w elements in an insulated keg and column can throw at it without much water use. I thought I would share.

Looks good mate. :handgestures-thumbupleft:
Where did you find the stainless gas line in Aus? I couldn't find any a while ago when I was looking for some.

I bought it on Amazon for 20 bucks with another 10 or so for delivery. I bought a couple. I was thinking about making a 2" graham condenser with the second. The tube fits in 2" pretty tightly with no cold finger. I figure I could run the water from bottom to the top. I figure a nice compact condenser on the pot still would be less unwieldy than the big-arse liebig (1200mm) I have now. Sort of like the pure distilling pot still. Anyway the stainless gas line I got was this one (google it and amazon should come up first):

Watts Dormont 20-3132-60B Gas Dryer 1/2-Inch Diameter Connector, 60-Inch Length
