Packing order, copper and rock.

Postby BikinArak » Sat May 02, 2015 5:25 pm

I plan to pack a 4 ft 2 inch SS reflux column, to hand I have a roll copper packing, a 100g pack of copper saddles and crushed volcanic rock similar to scoria. I think more copper packing would be better but without it possibly genuine stainless scourers might be available in lieu of rock.

1- Just wondering if its best to put the copper at the bottom or the top?

2- I have a supply of thin wall 10 mm drawn copper tube, any advantage in packing a bundle of these maybe 6 to 10 inches long in the column. more copper contact for rising vapor but maybe not so good for reflux?

The copper goes in first in the T500, so the top.
As for rock, no comment unless it's classic stuff mainly from the 60's - 80's.....then I can boast an extensive knowledge.

I would put the rock on the bottom as this is going to get the dirtiest and you can throw it out at a small cost :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Cheers guys,

It looks like I have found a source of stainless scrubbers that prove to be stainless, better option than than rocks from what I have read. So should be the same deal, put them under the copper.

I'm using copper wire in place of scrubbies in my reflux build.

Yes i think I should be filling with copper as well but It takes some organizing to get it here, on the other hand the stainless ones are local and $3 a dozen, so they will have to suffice, for now. I have 10 mtrs of paper tin copper tube here, considering chopping it up into saddles.
