Replacing T500 Column with FSD parts

Postby Professor Green » Thu Jun 04, 2015 1:09 pm

Hey folks,

Looking for a good starting point for replacing the T500 column and, given that it is essentially just a packed column with a cooling coil at the end, was thinking that adding a 4" reflux condenser and a 4" packed section from FSD to the 4" pot still would be a a good way to go (once the packed sections become available again).

Cheers,
Prof. Green.

Don't you have a 100L boiler on the way? :think:

Yes I do. I also have a 4" pot on the way with it.

I currently have the t500 boiler, alembic dome & condenser and the t500 column. The 4" pot should replace the t500 alembic and I am looking to replace the column at some point in the not too distant future.

Ultimately YES!!!!

Just looking for a good way to get there from where I am today. I figured starting with the packed section and a reflux condenser I could replicate the t500 column functionality with something a little more solid and then I could expand on that with SG Tees further down the track. Am I barking up the wrong tree?

I think its a good idea. When i piss my T500 off i plan on replicating the reflux with a 500mm packed section and reflux condenser into a shotgun all in 6". I think it will be good as a reflux like the T500 and still be a viable pot. I dont think it will reach azeo but i only get about 92% with my T500 anyway. Larger diameter means faster runs so that's caught my eye

So if you want a faster reflux than the T500 to go on your 100L boiler then i say go for it :handgestures-thumbupleft: , add the packed section and the RC. You might get 2 to 2.5L per hour @ 92% (maybe) with a 4" and still be able to do strip n spirit runs. Then add tees as you can afford or make them

WTDist, are you going to run a 6" diameter column on a T500 boiler?

Diameter = speed, but speed is also limited by power... Not sure how well a 6" reflux still will hold up with only 2000W up it...

Lol no i wont :laughing-rolling: by the time i do this i hope to build it slowly then sell the t500 boiler and all to fund the keg and fsd elements. it will be in the distant future though. itl b basic but it should work. i figure 2 2400W will be enough for a reflux run with low wines. its still in the planing though 8-}

After a bit if a chat with Mac yesterday (thanks Mac), it was determined that I would probably not have enough height in the column when using a single packed section and the reflux condenser to achieve a decent result. The alternative suggestion was to persevere with the T500 column for the moment as it does do fairly reasonable job on neutrals and to start building up a neutraliser by adding SG Tees to the 4" pot to increase the ABV on the stripping/flavour runs and then add the packed section and reflux condenser once I had amassed the required number of Tees.

The neutralizer is the way to go! The quality of the spirit significantly better compared to the T500

Looking forward to experiencing that in person in the not too distant future then I can pass T500 column and pot on to some one a little less picky than myself.
