My Spiral Prismatic Packing (SPP) arrived

I can't remember how much I ordered, I thought it was 4 litres but I ended up getting what appeared to be nearly 5 litres of it. The stuff is heavy! I've got it rolling in some ethanol now to clean the cutting oil which is on it. It's funny how you can put liquid on this stuff which looks solid/stable and it just disappears into it with nearly no resistance. I've never really seen anything like it before.

Here's a video with me pouring some metho on it. The stuff is so heavy it doesn't really move and the liquid goes down like theres no resistance. Pretty cool.

Can't remember what I paid, 300 or 400 something like that. But you wouldn't need that much for a 2 inch or 1.5 inch column. I also got enough to pack a metre of column which isn't really needed for how I do things either (2 distils). If I had my time over I'd go with a 2 inch column, 3inch is just a bit crazy powerful for what I need. But hey, maybe in the future I'll be doing fuel or something... you never know with the way the world is going these days. I kinda look at the still like some investment in an alternative future, besides the short term goals too. :)

Because it's like 95% ethanol and a good way to clean stainless steel of oil? Is there something wrong with this?

Probably the poison they add to the 95% ethanol so that its "un-drinkable".
But then all you need to do is boil it in water to remove the metho.

From what I know, there is no poison in Diggers brand metho
As per their MSDS, it's 95% ethanol and 5% water
However I'm willing to bet there's around .1% bittering agents to make it taste disgusting

look on your metho bottles.

they say methylated spirits which could mean 95% ethanol and .5% metho or 50/50 but as it states 'methylated spirits'. i read years ago some poison is added too...

Metho is just 95% ethanol 5% methanol essential the reason you remove foreshots to rid the wood alcohol. The poison is methanol.

There is cutting oil on the SPP, which is probably as dangerous as any poison which may be in the metho. The idea is to get the stuff free from oil, then rinse them well with other cleaning agents, then run vinegar and finally a low wines "pure" ethanol through it.

I hope no one would use anything washed in metho straight in a still.

i would in the sense that i throw away fores and take extreme cuts. if metho is still on the still it will burn off first with fores and heads, low boiling point remember. i would only be concerned if i was not doing cuts

If you're buying Digger's metho (it's what most places in Aus sell), as per my link to their MSDS it's only ethanol and water

i give mine away to tradie mates for cleaning on the job n what not (heads).

when i collect fores now i just tip it down the drain. i have no use for it, i have pleanty

The one down side to this SSP is that it won't be any good for removing sulphides. ;-)
