I hear but I don't see you. I have never produced ethanol in my 2 litre Pyrex Glass still which is heated by an electric hot plate. So please tell me why I might be in danger of BANG. I have never heard of this happening in essential oil production. The flash point of most essential oils is much greater than 100C.

Even now I intend producing an essence from botanicals to make Gin. So ethanol will not be involved in that phase.

If you consider this to its, quite ridiculous conclusion, how the hell would you fight a bush fire which was flashing at below 100C?

He's not saying it will explode with essential oils, he's pointing out the fact that these cheap stills you are talking about could be used to distill alcohol by someone that might be new to the hobby and not understand the consequences of doing so. We are all about safe home distilling here so people pointing out the dangers is a good thing. People aren't having a go at you mate, don't take everything so personally.

Not talking about the solution exploding am talking sbout the glass failing. I can show you a pic of the result
When a pyrex roasting dish exploded just two days ago. Perhaps if the glass fails it will just leave a wet stain on the carpet, but on the flip side perhaps since its already at vaporization point it will expand in gas form then ignite from electrical or open flame heat source toasting everything around it.

Your thread is gin which is an ethanol solution. Isnt eseential oul moot point since they are made with water, steam disttaltion anyway??

Anyway I have put forward my point do what you want Im not your mother just dont come running screaming if something goes pear shaped...

Goes without saying. You would be 110 years old if you were my "mother". Please relax Bluc, I can't run without a wheelchair and I don't do screaming, and am not fussed about pears.

Sorry to say Arismac but this has turned completely off topic. This thread needs to continue as a discussion of gin recipes or it’ll be removed.

I wouldn’t joke about it mate, at the end of the day you are tax dodging federal government excise.

If the ATO wants you it will be the feds kicking your door in not the local copper coming over for a chat.

That’s highly unlikely providing you make it for personal consumption only.

Oops. Just read the post before mine. I guess we all agree safety is always paramount.

Back to gin recipes... had anyone got any exotic hero ingredient suggestions? I’m ready for another run and need some inspiration!

A reflux still is no good for gin mate. You will need one to make the neutral that you use for gin but then you'll need a pot still to make the gin.

This reflux still makes great gin

For the OCD people
X juniper
X/2 coriander
X/10 angelica, cassia, cinnamon, licorice, bitter almonds, grains of paradise, cubeb berries
X/100 bitter & sweet orange peel, lemon peel, ginger, orris root, cardamom, nutmeg, savory, calamus, chamomile

If we use X = 20g, then X/2 = 10g, X/10 = 2g, X/100 = 0.2g (200mg).

Multiply by the number of finished litres. Using only one of each division provides 32.2 grams/litre, leaving considerable room for adjustment and addition.

This is only a guideline, so keep in mind that variations to this pattern bring out different flavours and back-flavours, a different nose, a different aftertaste and mouth-feel. Also remember that the spirit, regardless of the distillation method used, must be as clean as possible (absolute minimum heads and tails) because re-distillation is for the purpose of adding the botanicals, not fixing the wash.
