Thread sealant for drip filter

Postby M8Harry » Mon May 27, 2019 3:55 pm

Hi all,

after plenty of googling im kinda confused so ill throw this to the brains trust.

I stripped down the stainless filter to give it all a deep clean and after removing a country mile of thread tape off the valve that controls the drip flow, im now left with a thread that isnt sealing water tight (i test with water first).

Im getting the vibe that thread tape isnt a great long term solution, so im a touch confused what I can use to seal up the thread on the valve with out potentially leeching anything into the alcohol (40%) im filtering.

im probably over thinking it but I would rather try and adopt best practice earlier than later.

all help appreciated

Cheers

I would stick to thread tape. Ptfe(thread tape) is supposed to be inert in ethanol and other stilling related chemicals..

Ok. Thanks a bunch.

I did notice that when I went to the kitchen I spotted something on the bench. Muggins here forgot to reinstall the o ring :angry-banghead:

It’s working great now, but thanks for the pointer on thread tape, I was confident I read somewhere it wasn’t ideal for alcohol over 20%. Happy to be wrong on this.

You will find that the PTFE tape comes in different colours. White is the thinnest, then yellow then pink. I tend to use pink for the best seal.
If it will be in direct contact with ethanol (rather that water) the yellow has better performance and durability

Stick with PTFE thread tape. Its safe, proven and food service approved.
