Any use for the remains of a spirit run?

Postby Tesla101 » Mon Jan 27, 2020 5:17 pm

Hi folks,

Just got done with doing my spirits run.

I just took 2.6L out of the low wines, which was about all the alcohol in there according to the calculator. The last 200mL was still at 91 %ABV.

Just wondering, before I chuck it out - is there any use for what's still in the boiler after the spirit run? Can I add it to the next spirit run, or is the alcohol in it pretty much all tails?

Yep tails, water and salts and other stuff that won't boil. It's useful for cleaning grotty stuff while it's still hot and removing bottle labels, but otherwise ditch it.

I pump mine straight into the inspection port for our sewage line.

equipment: Eve - 4" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (sieve plates), 330 mm packed section on a keg boiler with 2 x 2000 W elements.
Currently having a makeover: 2" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (1" bubble caps, no sight glasses...maybe not for much longer!) on a bain-marie boiler.

Put some rum dunder in the freezer to keep and found that it has a lower freezing temperature then water must be the alcohol and other ingredients so if want to make some bottles of ice to keep an esky cold will do a good job but not going to be very good to drink.

Use it as the souring agent for sour mash whiskey, if its a whiskey run. I use the inspection port at night for the excess...

Thanks for the replies.

I took db's advice and stripped a few labels from old grog bottles - then threw it in the cooling tanks  Should keep my subby pump nice and clean :teasing-tease:

It was my one and only Turbo run. Not much use for anything else :))

Ah good thinking RC. I don't think there's any copper, SS or rubber in my cooling tanks, mostly plastic in the wheelie bins and pump bits. But good to keep in mind what's in the remains of the run

Thanks

I add it to my windscreen washer bottle in the car, along with some washing up liquid. Keeps is nice and clean. Will be giving a heap to a mate who does a heap of welding, as a cleaner.

I use olive oil and bicarb to clean the label glue off bottles; works a treat - I don't seem to have the same success with 92% tails..

There might not be any copper and stainless in the cooling tank, but there will be in the still that you're trying to cool :-B

Lol yep, got me there Zak

Do you think 2-3L of crud mixed in 420L of water will hurt the still? Also, with it being stinking hot in Melbourne today and tomorrow will any of it evaporate out? Or am I just safer replacing the coolant water?

I'd say you'd be fine mate, I wouldn't stress too much about it.

Rum dunder is an awesome rust stripper and full of useful minerals for the garden we water it down 50/50 with water and then use it on the lawn and compost piles. Grain back-set is much the same.
Neutral has been covered above.
