It looks fabulous
If it is just what the doctor ordered will we get a Medicare rebate :laughing-rolling:
Is there a simple version of what this does, I believe it is for flavoured spirits, whiskeys and rums, and is very much used by the Irish distillers. Does the expansion area provide turbulence and movement that encourages a small amount of reflux ?
Does it somehow enhance the flavours. I have never understood what it does to the product much less how
Is there a simplistic short answer to what it does .

Simplistically, It provides a very small amount of reflux worth a couple points of abv and changes a few reactions of esters which will change the output flavour a bit.

Currently cant find a link to a paper that did a very good test on an onion vs basic head vs swan neck, more difference than you would think and worth worrying about if your after a particular profile. will post it up when I stumble across it again.

They do look cool though

Now on looking at that pic in detail I can finally see how an onion head should be made :handgestures-thumbupleft: basically the lower part is a frustum and the top section is spun over a former in a lathe. then it is either tig welded or soldered to join it all together. The use of SS for the tri clamps is a nice touch too for long term strength and durability.

Now do you know as I've seen this I'm just going to have to tool up and make my own as I did try copper spinning when making that 1-1/2" boiler but decided the hammer ruled :laughing-rolling: . I reckon a blow torch at the rear of the lathe then use the cross slide to form the copper over the former would make for the nice cap for the onion then a simple bit of drafting will get the template for the frustum.

The big question is can I do all of this for less than the cost of just buying one :laughing-rolling: so one does have to ask what is the price of just the onion with 4" tri clamp connections. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Cheers Bryan

Just had a close up look at that pic and the weld/solder on the temp socket does look like a bird shit weld to me :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: I could be wrong but from that enlarged pic it surely looks like bird shit :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:
