Sinners and grinners, here's a short video on how to remove the spear and circlip from a 50lt keg[/url]

Cheers

Nice vid.

You should be able to remove the circlip without distorting the lip. Here's the best method that I've found:

another good video...l think l seen that one or one like it when l first tried to remove the spearncirclip which lead me to my method as l did not have a sharp drill bit...both methods works great, the hammer and screwdriver method does not distort the lip as it does not require a hard enough hit to remove the circlip, l improvise a lot when the tools are not at hand. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I had a really stubborn clip the other day. The keg had been out in the weather for 5 years or so.
Used all of the usual methods. It was too tight.
Tapped the clip around to the point in the spear where there is a small square slot/ hole.
Then I was able to use a punch to enlarge the slot, tap the end of the circlip over the hole I made and get some long nose pliers in and pull the clip out.
If you cant see the slot I mean tap the circlip round with a punch until you can.

Great Video JD.
I bought a keg from them and the condition of it was very similar, it had a huge dent in the rim at the top.
Not overly impressed either.

Haven't watched the vids.
Attacked mine with a crowbar.
Little prod down the valve, bit of a lever and out it came.
No cuts, bruises, sweat or swearing.
Recommended! ;-)

lol's I got covered in beer the first time I did it...we had booze dripping of the roof of my garage for an hour or so...lol...you do not have to plunge the plug down hard because if there is any beer left in the keg...well your gunna have a beer shampoo...lol.. you could even throw a towel over it to stop the booze going everywhere

Just depress plug down slowly making sure you are not leaning over it and if theres any weight (liquid) in the keg do it out side with a umbrella...lol. both vids have there merits and I do agree with you sillys vid has more finess and a drink for the effort... be careful people with any pressurised container its good we have two methods up as if you have not got the tools needed you can do it my way...caveman style...no offence cavy...once more be careful and fully assess the job at hand.

removing the spear and circlip 50lt keg

Postby wedwards » Fri Aug 31, 2012 10:36 am

Tip it on its side a little and the residual liquid will be nowhere near the end of the spear so you will just get air every time. I learnt this the hard way too ;)

Happy days...no skinned knuckles or blood spilt...
Broke 2 drill bits but my bits barely scratched the clip.
A screwdriver tapped in between the lip and the clip managed
To get it started and spear removed

Great info to have in this forum. It took me ages to find something on youtube and that wasn't quite accurate. You have nailed it with this one. The same way I eventually got the circlip out of mine ;-)

good stuff...did you clean the keg out straight away? rinse with hot water and inspect with a torch...l have cleaned mine right up and have been blasting it with my water blaster but it still has light grey spots on the inside on the bottom so I think I might give it a hot vinegar clean to get it spot on. I think its starting to look like a keg you can be proud of heres some photo...

I tried stainless steel soap pads which worked mmmm to a point, then I tried a kitchen sponge with a scotch bright on one side and sponge the other and bingo it worked well but like anything I had to use the elbow grease and some brasso. I am not finished yet more photos to come in the coming weeks.

Haven't cleaned inside yet.
Am considering dropping some dishwasher tablet in and fill with hot water.

I use what ever sterilizer/cleaner I have laying around with about 10 l of hot water. Then drop a 2 m chain in and swirl the fark out I it. It noisy but gets the job done.
Don't forget to rince and dry well.

Good idea using the chain to clean out keg but alas I dont have any chain...I live in deepest darkest Tasmania, if your not self supporting your at the mercy of local businesses.

Another worthy idea, and lucky me my wife has a dishwasher and now she is less two cleaning tablets...he..he...ha...haaaar :teasing-tease: ...sorry for that I lost it for a bit... I placed two tablets into around twenty lts of hot water swished it around till I felt like the keg won and let it sit over night.

The next morning I turned the keg up side down and repeated the same procedure and left it for a couple of hours when I return I then depressed the valve in the spear sealing the keg to de pressurise it. Lucky I did as it was pressurised.

I was surprised the amount of pressure it had built up...so once more treat this method with caution ! then I removed the spear and blasted it out with the little toy gerni I have and its as clean as a whistle now.

Thanx to all that contributed to this thread thus far as its been a group effort :handgestures-thumbupleft: . maybe this thread could be made a sticky for newbies and all the other that has not got a clue how to do this.

All of these videos lack detail. They dont show how many times you'll swear, how many drill bits you'll break or the sheer joy that you get when you finally get the sucker opened :-)
