Just a heads up for WA rum makers. You can get as much molasses as you want at city livestock on gnangara road near ellenbrook (west of) for about $2 a liter.

Have you looked at where they sell for race horses last time i looked at a seller there seemed to be a shortage of supply and had none in stock.

I get mine in the Canberra region & the brand is Castlereagh. The Castlereagh feeds web site:
https://castlereaghfeeds.com.au/under "Find a Stockist", list several around the Newcastle area.
Cheers. (I pay $24.50 for a 13kg bucket)

They even have a stockist in my suburb, if they don't actually stock it i'll be able to ask if they can get some in at least.
Cheers

Wondering where the rum makers source their molasses in Brisbane and how much I should be looking at paying per litre/kg? Have found some in small quantities but works out a little expensive when doing a few batches. Thanks guys

As mentioned earlier a few use capalaba produce - i cant comment on where they are with availability or price though -
Northsiders are a bit screwed, nothing reliable has been reported lately? - I have access to 50c/l gear (200l min buy), its a mere 30 min drive for me - but im 200k north of brissy - I would volunteer to pick some up for pple, but im not up for splitting any yet - i got enough on my plate distilling wise with AG shenanigans on my hit list atm
Many only run it in summer, From what i understand, your better off fermenting then, the extra heat stress on the yeast brings out some desired flavours
So apparently there was a molasses shortage this year   Might be best to just jump on the phone and call around, if you find any good deals, let us know :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Thanks Al, post was pretty old so thought I would ask the question. I've got some of that Bundy Molasses previously mentioned but thought there might be something better out there.
I don't suppose a heat belt would help with the 'chilly' Brissie winter temperatures would it? I'm not a rum man but I've tried some from the newish rum distillery in Milton and it's not a bad drop even without ageing, so I thought I would try it out

Heat belt will help (might want a thermostat on that), what size fermenter you using? How warm is your brew area? It will ferment, , just different to how it would in summer
We already had single digit temps a few nights here, once I I get around to using different yeasts and I have a better idea of temps where I plan to use larger fermenters, I will work out a brewing schedule based on season to avoid using too much power.
Dead fridges are meant to be good for regulating temps, depends on space available

I'm going to use 60l fermenters in my garage. The garage is a double garage with garages either side and unit above so it's not the coldest place, although we are expecting single figures next week too.
I've got 4 60l drums and was thinking of doing 4 batches at a time so have enough after stripping all 4 to do a spirit run without having to wait for 4 generations

You have a bubbler, you dont need to strip.
Single run is the go.

Stig, you think just single runs through 4 plates? How does it compare to stripping and spirit run through a pot?

The whole idea behind the bubbler is single run full flavour high ABV.
Your not going to get the full manky flavour you would via a basic pot still but its a more polished flavour.

Great, same as the Whiskey then.
In regards to generations the usual is to make 4 generations, add it together and run it all but what if I made 4 separate batches together. I make 4 1st gen batches and run them together then go on to 2nd, 3rd and 4th gens, essentially the whole run would be a single generation as opposed to mixed 1-4. How would this affect the taste overall with the supposed unique and complex flavours in the later gens?

I only ever do single gen rum , gives me the flavoring I’m after.
Bigger brains will have a better answer

I won't profess to be the bigger brains that stig is talking about but here's my 2c...
I reuse dunder but pitch new yeast as lowans is perfectly adapted to molasses as it's bread/cultivated/raised (no idea about the correct term) on molasses anyway and it's dirt cheap.
Doing it this way helps me get more of the dirty funky flavours that I like oh and I'm back to pot stilling too lol

I ended up finding a supplier in Newcastle/Lake Macquarie called Cardiff Produce.
They do stock feed and the like.
I'm not sure of the quality/suitability yet as i only used a small amount in my last gen.
$2 a liter filled from an IBC or they had some prefilled 2 liter containers when i was there.
Cheers
Off'y
