I make the GlenFeddich knock off from the kit and I actually do rate it :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Need something to drink while the rest of my gear is oaking :D

Now I just buy all the little bottles I need and mix them all up into a bottle then when I need to mix a batch I know to add whatever amount to the nuetrel, saves a lot of rooting around adding little bits of this and that.

The good thing about the kit is you can tailor it to your own taste to a fair degree.

Yeah dont buy the whole kit, check out their recipes and see what bottles you need. I still have half of the kit in full bottles that I have never opened :angry-banghead:

I use TPW all the time but can't see how some people are getting 2.6 litres @ 94% . I get at best 1.2 litres @ 94 - 95% after taking 150ml fores and stopping when it tastes like tails. Interested to know what others are getting.
Cheers,
Alan

Are you sure you don't have a vapour leak? What volume of wash and are you running and what is the ABV?

Hi Alan, are you doing a stripping run first? If so, how much low wines are you starting with and at what %abv are you starting at?

I generally get about 6L at about 40% from a stripping run out of a 25L TPW that was about 11%.

I then dilute the low wines down to about 10L if I don't combine low wines from other stripping runs. Out of that I'll get about 2.5L of 91-93% for the spirit run.

Got a 25 litre wash. Run it through the T500 and get 1200 mls @ 94 - 95%.. Maybe I should leave it go. I just taste it after 1200 mls and it doesn't have the burn and thought it was tails coming in. Temp is about 40 degrees. I only do one run and don't keep tails. Maybe I am missing out on a lot.

Ok here is an update. I just did a run of TPW today 25 litre wash, and instead of stopping at 1200 mls I let it go and stripped it off at between 52 - 55 degrees. Got 2.8 litres @ 95 percent... gonna water it down and do a spirit run at about 45 degrees. Is that a better way to do it? God knows how much grog I have thrown out over 3 years.. :crying-blue: Oh well you live and learn.

That's usually how much I get. I toss the first 300-400 to be safe and usually get 2.4 or so before it starts tailin

Hi Alan,

I find it helps if I do the maths.

Say I have a 25L wash and after it fermented out I calculated the alcohol content of the wash to be 11.5%. 25 x 11.5% is 2.875, so the maximum amount of alcohol in the wash is 2.875L.

If I then distill the wash and averaged 95% abv, then 2.875 x 95% is 2.73L. So I should get something close to 2.73L. In reality I'll get a bit less because a T500 isn't that efficient, but I'd certainly expect a lot more than 1.2L :-B

Also, I don't run my T500 by temperature - especially during a spirit run. As WJ has said in his thread Running the T500, the Proper Way it's better to run it with an output flow rate of drip, drip, dribble, drip...

I don’t run a T500, but I have always ended up with 10% of the fermented volume @95%... I tend (now) to be far more selective so don’t end up using the whole 10%, but it is useful as a guide to me.

But Tesla showed you how you can figure out what to expect... I just find atPW to be so solid that I don’t worry about the calf’s any more.

High quality hearts shouldn't have a "burn". You've probably been stopping at hearts and only collecting heads.

How about putting alcohol from previous run back into next to to increase available alcohol % have put first 1 litre even what you are throwing out .

How do you guys know when it gets to tails?

Re: 25l TPW wash....
I have always done the following:

1st 200ml = discard
Next 500ml = heads
next 3.5l = hearts
whatever comes after that = tails

Note: Usually stops about 3L into hearts.

Never work by numbers because no two runs will be the same.
Use taste, smell and touch

:text-+1: tails is easy compared to heads. Smell is usually enough. Taste is pretty yuck too.

Hey guys, just read through this thread and I saw that someone cleared a TPW with Glycerin and water. I ran my first two batches of TPW on the weekend and didn't use any clearing agent as I thought the TPW cleared itself. Is this correct? Cheers
