So it looks like I've got access to as much Sunflower seeds as I want. I'm starting with 30kg (along with some Sorghum but that's a different story) to see how well it works. I know theres a distillery in the US (Dalton Distillery) that makes what they call TazaRay which is 65% sunflower & 35% corn (I have read both are malted first).
Has anyone tried Sunflower seeds before? I'm thinking i might try aeound 60% Sunflower, 25% Corn & 15% Malted Barley & see how it turns out...

I’m not sure there is enough starch in sunflower seeds to ferment. They are used to produce oil….

One site I read mentioned an SG of 1.040 from straight sunflower seeds but I'm assuming that was the shelled seeds. I had a couple of minutes spare over the weekend so I milled 5kg & added 20L of 90 degree water & left overnight before adding Angel Yeast Leaven to see what I can get out of them. Ended up getting about 50kg of seeds that cost me nothing so worth a try to see what happens. After a day of fermenting it was smelling quite nutty so could turn out quite nice. Time will well...

Let us know how it goes. I like experimenting.

Well the original plan to use it with Angel Yeast didn't go to plan, it ended up turning into a moldy mess. So moving on from the Angel Yeast (I may try it again when I get a chance) I'm now starting to malt about a kilo & half to see how it turns out...

The interweeb says sunflower seeds are only about 7% carbohydrates….that makes 93% non ferment able content. High fat content….

Yea doubt that the angel yeast failed more likely not enough to convert to low alcohol content to preserve itself and instead it rotted..
