canecutter rum kit

Postby nuckles » Thu Jul 19, 2012 9:02 pm

So at the local home brew shop today and saw thecanecutter kit I had bought one about 8 years ago.
$50 a bit steep but thought I would give it a go.

I put down last night instructions say stir at 4 days 7 days 14 days then leave 14 days, a long time I think.

I did not weigh the different parts guess is about 3l molasses 3kg dex 1 kg white and raw sugar bag of yeast with something white I think was salt.

Bubbling away nicely today.

Any questions will try to answer, any tips please let me know.

thanks

Hi Cam sorry for placing that reply without justifying it . In answer to your comment yes I agree with you that $ 50 is a bit steep so to justify why I'd hold that opinion I worked out my exact costs for my last 25 ltr rum wash using mcStills recipe
Molasses : $ 3.45
sugar : $ 3.78
yeast : 1.14
nutrient : .17
sub total $ 8.54 ... how ever looking at you kit it seems you have a clearing agent , this is $ 5.60 at the Brew shop here so
Total : $ 14.14
These are based on the prices paid here if i had of gone to the regional center i believe it would have been somewhat cheaper I did ask the Brew shop guy for his molasses price today and he said for rum I should get it from one of the fodder shops and gave me the address of the one he uses

I thought the same price wise. I did know about the list you have and am going to do it next but, I thought I could blow the cash somewhere else so why not try it. Wont do it any but lets see how it goes. Sometime you do something once.

Also I was reading about generation, so how will I go about this do I just add more sugar/mollasses to this after I distill?

I don't see why not , can even let it cool to 30 odd degrees before dumping it in the fermenter and re use the lees if ya like or dump it in hot and the lees become ya nuits and re pitch yeast when the temp is right (the way I do it everything dissolves better) either way

So I am going to still tonight. After I want to start next gen. From what I understand I am going to let boiler cool down use that add 3l molasses and 3kg sugar. Back into the fermenter plus some yeast. Am I correct.

G'day nuckles, use 5-7ltrs of your dunder from the boiler, if you have the yeast cake left in your fermenter you won't need
to add yeast (don't pour hot dunder on the yeast), should fire up in a few hours.

Cheers :handgestures-thumbupleft:
