I gave this method a go last weekend but scaled it up to 100 litres and mashed into my stainless 100 litre fermenter. All went well except the next day I couldnt get it to pull down in temp quick enough. I had left some water out so added cold water but it still sat at around 42C. I put a fan on the outside and just left it until that night to pitch.
No sign of fermenting had started so I figured it wasnt infected and pitched my yeast. Im going to strain it through my bag and into a second fermenter to allow it to settle so I can re-use the yeast for a second batch.

I brought fine cracked maize from Dandenong stockfeeds used to feed young chickens and it was cracked pefectly. didnt need to mill it at all.

In my opinion mate, that needs a lot of cracking...my best conversions have come from basically powder

Hope it works out well for you though :-D

This is by far now my favourite recipe.
Currently have 2 months age on my first batch using this method. It has so much more flavour.
I will never go back to grain sugar heads.
Working my way through my 2 nd bag of corn now.

I only got 6 litres from a 42 litre strip so that might explain why my abv was so low. (Around 6%)

I've done another couple of gens that are fermenting now and they had an SG of 1.040 and 1.049 so perhaps my fine cracked maize isnt quite fine enough. Only problem is I have nothing to crack it finer. I don't want to run it through my mill and risk stuffing it.

Heres a way out there thought. I wonder how I would go if I was to put some corn in a heavy duty plastic bag, then cover it with a blanket and drive over it with a small 1.5 tonne roller? (We have them at work) providing the bag didn't break open and I used a large enough bag with a small quantity at a time I think it might crush it nice and fine. I know the guys at work would enjoy doing this expirement.. If that didn't work I could always try a 20 tonne roller. :-D

I've given up trying to mill corn after ruining a couple of mills :handgestures-thumbdown:
I just get the cracked corn and run it through the blender, just doing small amounts at a time making sure not to get the flour to hot,and it works out faster than multiple runs through the mill :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Posted this on another thread a little while ago. Its a little ark mill and chews through dried corn with ease.

Get the settings right and it doesn't heat up. I broke 2 corona mills before going for this. If you're going for a larger corn mash i highly recommend it as it chewed through 40kg of corn without skipping a beat or getting hot.

How would you go with one of these
Image
I have the second largest one
Put a few litres water and your corn in the fermenter and spin it it will make porridge in no time
Just a thought

Loving this method and bill Brendan... But straining the grain is taking me hours.. No shit I've been squeezing mash between my hamds for a couple of hours now :angry-banghead:

I was really hanging to hope that you developed an agitator

There has got to be a better way than a strainer bag

I'm working on an idea at the minute to try make this job easier (one of the many ideas that are bouncing around in that vast space i call my mind :laughing-rolling: ). It involves an old twin tub washing machine. I haven't got very far yet but i think i my have found one to use as a prototype. Once i get it and have a closer inspection i hope it might be a possibility.

I'll let you know how it goes as i progress. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Skip ahead to 6 minutes.

A small scale version of something along these line would rock!

Only if we knew someone that could source and manufacture?

Just ran 22.5kg of corn through my kitchen blender!
500g = 10seconds to powder.

Image

Grain bill for the 150L mash:
22.5kg Corn
3kg malted barley
4kg malted barley (peated) (it's all I had available)
3kg rye
2kg wheat

Basically every ounce of grain I had lying around. The sugar ratios are near identical to the original.
I've got a little bit of work ahead of me. :D

I've got 5 x 4g packets of high temp alpha amylase but no other enzymes at this stage, I am trying to source all 3 liquid enzymes.

So thankful for this recipe and step by step post.

Cheers for now,

Mech.

Geez mrs Mac would shit if I used her blender for doing that much corn, reckon they wouldn't last long given that sort of treatment to often....... be nice to hear how much abuse your blender can handle doing this :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Breville 900W Model CBL6/A

It's on old spare of mine that hasn't been used in the last 3+ years.
Mrs Mech has a much nicer blender and she's already warned me not to touch it! :))
