Excuse my lack of knowledge on grains but should the malt be whole or cracked? And do you just soak the grain in boiled water the same as the BWKO?

This thread has been started for any one wishing to discuss the making of MacWhisky. The original Tried and Proven recipe can be found in the Tried and Proven section of the forum or by clicking HERE

Just cracked is fine, your only using the grain for flavor ;-)

Certainly sounds like a single malt scotch-like whisky...maybe you've only had bad scotch before Mac, and now you're coming around... ;-)

yeh it's kinda sweet but no way it tastes anything like scotch, I grew up with scotch drinkers in my family... I guess the first part of my sir name gives that away ;-)

I'll be in Scotland in about 6 weeks...might have to take an Aussie Distiller banner and deface Glenfiddich for a photo! :))

Hi Mac,
For this recipe what sort of Caramalt Liquid Extract are you using? Amber? As the only one my LHBS has is Morgans Amber Caramalt.

Yeah its not going to come out like scotch unless you either add peatreek or smoke the malt using peat ;-)

This recipe is a very cool idea. I had been making all my scotches using the all grain method (as that's what I'm used to for beers), but if I can get away with something simple like this and get close to the same flavour with a lot less work, then I'm in! Still asking myself why I didn't think of this haha

Yeah look guys I wouldn't really call it a Scotch, it is a lovely drink on it's own or with coke as a mixer.

I would say if you did the peat thing it would be a very good scotch, it has a ton of flavour and the caramalt really gives it some depth.

Cheers.

Hey Mac
Looking at giving this one a go, but having troubles finding the caramalt liquid extract. Where would you suggest to get this from? And how big is the tin you use? :handgestures-thumbupleft: cheers

Hey mate, any real world HBS would have Morgan's in 1.5kg tins... If you want to pay postage then all the online ones have it too but $12-13 tin of Morgan's will cost the same in postage.

Hi Gents,

I was at TWOC on the weekend, and I was advised they had sold out of the Morgans Caramalt. The guy there with a white beard (sorry I cant remember his name) gave me a Briess CBW brand one. I cant remember which one I will check it tonight and post a picture. He said it was very similar to the Morgans one. Hope this helps
