Hi all,

Going to put a rum wash down on the weekend. Couple of questions;

1. After the first batch is stripped and dunder added to ferment no. 2, do I add more molasses or will the original amount carry through 5 or so generations?
2. I got a 3 lt of backstrap ( think that is what it is called) for around $27, is this around the cost of non feed product?

Yo ho ho :handgestures-thumbupleft:

No you need to add fresh molasses and sugar each time. Use the Dunder to melt your sugar and molasses (well thin it out). I don't reuse the yeast or lees I just use the hot dunder then top up to my required level with tap water. add yeast @ 28 - 32 degrees c

That's very expensive for feed stock grade I pay $18 for 20L and I think the food grade stuff is around $20 for 13kg's

Jesus mate, sorry but that's rubbish. What's worse is it's 3kg, which is about 2.15L :scared-eek:

Most guys buy blackstrap for less than $1 per litre, and the top grade refinery molasses (which would be identical to that ibrew stuff) is $20 for 10L (14kg). 'Organic' would be the same as it's just unsulphured and had nothing added to it...

So the top food grade molasses should be $2 per litre, whereas that stuff is $12.56 per litre!!! :o :handgestures-thumbdown:

I dunno if online is the way to go because Molasses is so heavy. There must be a stock feeders nearby? even some of the larger petshop chains sell it ;-)

I'd doubt it by now if he's fermenting it warm :laughing-rolling:

I put my first rum down the other day too, but had an opposite experience :p I used fancy molasses and clarified with a simple boil to remove any solids/sludge...there's no frothing at all...it's just like a constantly fizzy Coke :-D

So i purchased 10 litres from Powells and used it in my second generation.....the whole thing did not bubble or fizz, it's just a black pit!! What I did (which is the same as my first generation except for the molasses brand/supplier);

Temp 28-30c
6lt's Powells Molasses
5kg Sugar
Water 40lt - bulk spring water adjusted to about ph of 5
Dunder - 5 litres
Put all back on on lees
80gms red star bakers yeast

It's day 5 and there is no activity at all. I believe it is the molasses but could it be something else? Maybe nutrients? ~x(

So, interesting experiment..

I setup 2 ferments; 1 with the stock-feed (90c per litre) molasses and 1 with the "premium" product ($7 per litre) - both were a new batch so no dunder used. Both batches were treated/made exactly the same except for the molasses.

Fermentation - ferment 1; stock-feed molasses. This barley "fizzed" and more or less just sat there for 4 days.
ferment 2; premium molasses. Violent fermentation right up to second day then constant bubbling and fizzing

Distillation - ferment 1; 700ml hearts at approximately 90%
ferment 2; 3.1l hearts at approximately 90%

My conclusion; the stock-feed molasses in the ACT is no good and sort of backs my theory "shit in, shit out". There was a definite taste difference after 24 hours airing as well with the expensive molasses being noticeably smoother.

Does anyone else have a similar experience or is the molasses you all use just great anyway?

Greetings all , just running this wash through my still for the first time , made some rum years ago with a different recipe , and was a little different , so this brings my questions

Has anyone added caramelized sugar to the final product to add flavor and colour ?
do you carbon filter the spirit ?

thanks
