Hello
Just after some advice. Keen to give this recipe a try . Was wondering if it would be alright to use wheat and barley for stock ? I've used cracked corn from the pet store once before .

https://woononapetfoods.com.au/products ... 1927415888

This would be the wheat I would use. Says it's washed . Same with the barley

Also just wondering about yeast ? Was thinking of using DADY yeast red label

Thanks in advance for advice

I have only ever used feed stock grain in all my washes. This is my go to recipe enjoy.

That's great to know. I recently did an all grain and it was a lot of work for about 6 litres of low wines . Definitely keen to start this and do 5 gens before running a spirit run .

What yeast do you use ?

I have tried this recipe several times it goes great until about the 3rd generation and then stalls. My current batch is the 3rd generation and has been down for about 6 weeks. I just checked to S.G. and its 1.05 ( started at 1.06) and still tastes sweet. Is there anything i can do to get it cranking again? Ph is ok.

Check the ph as well. Lots of backset can throw the ph out of whack..

I'll second the PH crash theory :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Now when doing generations it is handy to chuck a few oyster shells in to act as a PH buffer :handgestures-thumbupleft: Also if hot slops were thrown in there is a good chance the yeasties got toasted so a new yeast starter may be required.

What is the ideal ph for this recipe. I have added more yeast a few weeks ago and i thought it might go again, i got bubbles out of the airlock for a short period then nothing.

I have only done one "round" of generations of this recipe and don't recall my pH if I even measured it.
Bread yeast I assume as per recipe? I'd imagine pH should be around 5 but should work down to ~3.5ish depending on your yeast (but might be slower than expected). If you've only fermented from 1.06 down to 1.05, it should be above 4 I would expect.

Have you checked your pH? Have you tried oyster shells or something else to raise the pH?

Ok Prof, treat me gently!
Ive read about 20 pages of the 52 and still can’t figure out if I can do this!
Can I filter my wash off into my 50 l 5 star milk can or is it a grain on mash.
Instructions go from fermentation to distillation in one jump.

“should ferment out in 3 or 4 days depending on ambient temps, and I leave it to clear for another 3 or 4 days, I strip it fast and collect”??Sorry, dumb dum here!!!
Thanks

Hey there Dfer,
So once the wash has fermented out on grain, about a week or so for me,then I pump it from the fermenter to the boiler and do stripping run. Is this what you’re eliding to?

Bwko wash waiting to be transferred to boiler, there’s about 65ltr there and my boiler is 35 ltr I only fill boiler to 20-22 ltr so it’s 3 stripping runs for me.

Re using grain bed in bwko ferment.
So i have no new grain left for taking out and adding new stuff to bwko ferment I’m wondering if I can just reuse the grain bed I have in fermenter and throw a sugar head ontop let Cool add yeast etc ? Has anyone done this and if so how many times could it be done 3maybe.
Yes I could go get some bags of grain but it’s been sitting in fermenter about a week and smells quite sour mashy so thinking I might go with it again and see or not a great idea?

Thanks bluc il get it ticking over again in next couple of days then. I want to swap over to rum so didn’t want to buy more grain just yet.

Rob when was doing my AG first off do the mash which was the sweet mash then do a sugarback and add some backset to make a sour mash then I get the last of goodies out of the grain, then remove 80% of the grain do another mash and rinse and repeat until all the grain was used. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Now one could the same with this BWKO add the crushed grain for the sweet mash then start the sour mash with the sugarback then rinse and repeat until you have enough moonshine to age.
