This should be ok for a fermenter? How would you make the lid air tight tho?

Both of those will work fine, mate. As far as sealing them goes, get yourself some garbage bags or gladwrap and a big rubber band :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I use little 60L wheely bins, they work fine.

I went to a local micro-distillery and they don't even bother covering up their fermenters - reckon its not required.....

Food for thought!

I think it generally depends on the type of wash fermenting...many pro/commercial operations use open top fermenters as they're usually running some kind of all grain wash. These ferment hard and fast, normally finished in 3 to 4 days, and create a thick layer of CO2 on top, which keeps out any oxygen and contamination. A sugar wash on the other hand can ferment for 2 or more weeks, and with such a slow ferment, the push of CO2 is generally not as strong, and you need to seal it up to protect your wash.

What were they fermenting, huggy?

I just close the lid on my rum bin, with a brick on top. Doesn't seal, but the flies and ants can't get in. I take a bit more care with my whiskey washes though.

They were fermenting moonshine / "bourbon". I just found it interesting they had no cover at all when I did the tour - they even said they "don't mind bugs in the wash as the extra protein is great for the yeast".......

Its one of those things were you don't want to let on how much you know and that you are brewing yourself, but asking the right questions to get pertinent info. :))

Forget DAP or vitamin tablets then! :laughing-rolling:

Newbie: "Why has my wash stalled?"

Bunnings use to supply 300ltr rainwater tanks for $89
They make good fermenters and water reservoirs.
I just fit the lid... closed top but nothing else.
The CO2 escapes and the bugs don't get in .... until you open it for a look.

Like these... :D :D :D

But they seem to have gone out of them..

Stinking of mash?

You mean 'carrying the pleasant aroma of a whiskey mash fermenting throughout the home'?

Hey Guys
I combined all the small drums/fermenters into one because they just take up too much room.
My place is small enough without lots of lovely white plastic drums laying around.

So now it's one 300 ltr tank... Just add 25Kg of coarse cracked whatever and 50 kg of sugar, water and yeast... boom you're away and it's outside.
With head room I estimate it actually carries about 260ltrs. :handgestures-thumbupleft: :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I get 5 to 6 runs out of it without the hassle of cleaning up little drums or storing grain. (No weavels either)

Gave my small fermenters away to the bloke that bought Steampunk 1.

Much neater and takes up less than 1/4 of the space. :handgestures-thumbupleft: :handgestures-thumbupleft:
