Turbo yeast replace

Postby Titan8 » Mon Feb 01, 2016 7:39 am

Guys when i got my T500 it came with all ingrediants for a Turbo wash. I dont want to use the turbo yeast so can i just replace with bread yeast? Was thinking of 80g as per TPW recipe. Any issues or do i need to adjust the quantiy. Kit came with 6kg of sugar for a 25ltr wash. Also if i use bread yeast i dont think i need that liquid carbon stuff that turns the wash black.

best to just stick with the tried and proven recipe of the TPW, a good yeast like bakers yeast, (lowans) doesn't need all the additive crap like carbon or clearing agents like a turbo does, but it does need looking after, it needs a nutrient (like tomato paste) and the correct ph level to thrive in, (ie the citric acid).
its a 100% reliable recipe that gives a good result everytime. :handgestures-thumbupleft:
Until ive finished my apprenticeship in this hobby ill stick with the expert knowledge and guidance that im finding here.

i was under the impression that the citric acid was to help break sucrose into glucose and fructose to make it available to the yeast straight away?

No the citric acid is to adjust (lower) the pH of the wash to a level the yeast likes to work at.

You are confusing this with inverting the sugar - boiling for 30 mins or more with some citric acid. This is the breaking down process you are referring to

Surprised I can't get answer to my original post. Can I replace turbo yeast with normal lowans bread yeast and do I need to adjust yeast qty v 6 kg sugar. I prefer not to use turbo yeast for flavour issues but surely I can use the sugar

Yes you can replace the yeast 60g should be fine.

Don't go over 5kg of sugar for 25L it will be less stress for the yeast and will result in a better product.

Edit: don't bother with the black stuff unless you want to shell out for a turbo clear to clear it after, it will clear naturally with a little time.

Hi Titan :handgestures-thumbupleft:

If it was me use your sugar stuff that came with your still, i would probably go 5kg of sugar stuff, chuck in maybe 150g of tomato paste for some nutrients and 80g of lowans yeast for a 25 - 30l wash . Let it ferment out for say a week then give it a bit longer and it should clear on its own, so no need to use any carbon or clearing agents.

I have never tried this but give it a go it should ferment out no problem :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Good luck mate and let us know how it works out :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Thank you very much Sam I will prepare as a TPW as advised. I just don't want good sugar to waste regardless of yeast used. My intention was exactly as you described just wanted confirmation my thinking was good. Will put was down tomorrow and give it a go. Nothing lost if wash fail however

Use what you've got, that's the best thing about this hobby, and if you fuck up, re run it as a neutral. :laughing-rolling:
