High(ish) temp success

Well I just made up some CFW yesterday (4 x 20l buckets) 1st gen, and after mixing the cooked Cornies with the hot sugar solution and topping up with cold water, the temp was at 45 C.
I let it sit until it was time to close up the shed and put the dogs away, and get dinner sorted, (6ish) but because it was a nice sunny day today the temp wasnt dropping in the shed, or the buckets, very much. I pitched the yeast (Lowans) at 40 C anyway. My thoughts were that if it failed I could repitch in the morning and there would be some extra nutrients in there as well. But Lo and behold, I have 4 nice frothy buckets this morning! Not suggesting that everyone try this or that its not damaging but it seems that Lowans, at least, can tolerate a little bit of extra heat.

Yep she's good gear the old lowans, I've been starting my rum washes at about 42'c and she go's great :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Some yeasts do best in regards to speed at around 45 degrees according to some studies I have seen. Unfortunately there isn't much discussion on "other things" in most of these studies I read so it might not be the best in regards to taste. I suspect Lowans is one of these yeasts that can perform fast around 40C .

What was the taste like on this batch Undertaker? Any differences on the distilling you noticed?

That batch is on oak at the moment. Will be sampling some in another couple of weeks.

Sounds nice Phil, yes does the testing for science! ;)

Was there any noticeable differences in the heads/tails you collected or just business as usual?

Nah pretty much the usual taste.
I just gave the bottles a shake today and the sniff test was pretty good! I wonder if I can wait another 2 weeks for tasing?
