Controller build

Postby caspian » Fri Feb 05, 2016 5:41 pm

some pics of a controller I finished yesterday. eBay 4KW SCR and Hall effect current/wattage meter. Jaycar box is too big but I needed the depth to get the thickness of the fan over the SCR casing.

had to epoxy the meter in as the wall thickness of the box is too great for the side clips.

just need to drill a few holes for air-out (stupid forgot to do them when I was doing the rest of the cutouts) and it's good to go.

yeah, one of these. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/131509724054

only watt mode is of any use, but seems to work OK for dialling to a setpoint using watts or amps.

now I just need a couple of macrum washes to finish so I can do a spirit run!

Looking good. I have the same meters.
Ps make sure the power supply for the meter is on the wall outlet side not the scr side, otherwise it wont work for long. Trust me I know 8-}

Same box as the one I used. The thickness and strength surprised me. Would you believe I intended to cut it with a Stanley knife to start with!! 8-}
A lot neater than mine too but I crammed a bit too much stuff in there.

:sad: hmm, I was kind of enjoying seeing the voltage change too. might have to rethink that one then.

I do have an SSR that finally turned up after about 6 weeks on order so I can see a second build on the cards already.

small update - got a chance to run this a week ago on my first spirit run. worked fine, and the casing on the SCR was only just touch warm at the end of a run driving a 2kW T500 boiler. the digital readout makes it very easy to adjust indeed.

mark 2 already in the works using an SSR and industrial railmount digital readout, cast aluminium case, and recessed IEC input/output sockets to make storage easier. will probably give mk 1 to a mate to wean him off his T500 reflux head. :)
