Your beer brewing skills will help you especially if whisky is in your future.

Just don’t get freaked out by lack of sanitation and no regard for hot side aeration as these are negated by distillation :handgestures-thumbupleft:

We don't sterilize, we sanitize

People with asthma, avoid using sodium metabisulphate.

I only use hot water mate, and that is the fermenter only, which I then cover with a garbage bag and secure with a jockey strap. I havent lost a wash yet.

Everything else is just given a rinse. I saw a similar question on one of the distillers Facebook groups and one $#%^head suggested you should use foreshots... Dont use foreshots.....

Good luck with it mate.

If you use boiling water you are sterilizing (apart from the very rare bacteria that can survive, but if you have that you have bigger issues)

The greatest need is to sanitise all vessels that have contained yeast or low AbV liquid. Milton tablets are perfect for this job. I make a batch of Milton in one fermentor then pump to the other fermentor using the same pump I use for pumping the wash to the still. Don't forget the mixing paddle and any other utensils employed when mixing the TPW. As a general rule there is no need to steralise the still, just keep the copper clean..

Yeah he doesn't mention what to use to sterilize, boiling water will sterilize it ( again, apart from super rare bacteria)

It's not sterilisation. It's sanitation. And lots of people get away without doing it. I myself run starsan through everything. It's so cheap. Learn to love the foam.

I was reading online and as surprised to see things like bleach and chlorine ad recommendations for sterilizing equipment. Does anyone here use anything less detrimental to human health?

Good, regular hygiene and cleaning regimes. A mild caustic detergent, and a plentiful hot water rinse, is more than adequate for most situations.

Reserve bleach, peroxides and similar disinfectants for when you have a real problem (say a Brett outbreak).

Chlorine bleaches are more of a concern as an environmental risk than a human exposure/health issue.

Everything in moderation, sanitisation should not replace thorough mechanical cleaning.

Remember that Sulphates (sodium met, potassium met) will liberate sulphur dioxide when heated, which corrodes copper actively, and is a harmful gas. Sulphates are good for wine and beer, not distilling, as we use elevated temperatures.
