Gday everyone, I was a bit hesitant about posting this for various safety reasons but decided it would be of more benefit than harm.

As everyone is aware, electricity is not to be taken lightly. You rarely get a second chance when it comes to an electric shock.

If you decide to take this project on, and are not an electrician, then you must get it checked by an electrician.

Cheers mate, the pot values depend on the relay. Some are usually 500k and some 250k I've noticed, should be marked on the relay next terminals 3/4... :handgestures-thumbupleft:

The diagram is correct and safe for a PSR-25 but ill attach another to suit the fotek/eBay types ... :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I really think what you have showed is excellent .

Sorry not trying to be a pain ,just trying to clarify what seems to be a bit of ambiguity with these controllers.

Is this the the data sheet that you got from RS ? http://docs-asia.electrocomponents.com/ ... 02e5aa.pdf This is what I get from them and also from Farnell .It clearly chows the neutral connected to the neutral terminal so are they supplying a different data sheet with the device ?

Despite this point of issue ,I agree that it will work no doubt the way you show and obviously it does ,Yours works :handgestures-thumbupleft:

So my main issue is with potential electrical breakdown of pot under stress .
Whats the issue ? If the pot insulation breaks down between the wiper/tracks and the case, then the case may become live.

Is this dangerous ?

If the Pot is securely mounted in an earthed metal box with appropriate star washers then no.

If the pot is mounted in a plastic box then yes .

Basically all exposed metal parts of the pot MUST BE EARTHED to be safe

So how do we safely deal with them ?

This is my opinion.

1 ) Use the physically largest pot you can .Larger pot .larger gaps between bits .Larger insulation.

2) Only use an earthed case to mount your controller in.Securely mount your Pot to this Metal case so that the body and shaft are also earthed .

3) Use a plastic Knob on the pot shaft .It gives another level of Isolation

4) Never use a plastic case to mount your pot to . It will be electrically floating above earth and potentially lethal

Please feel free to comment .I'm not professing to be expert here .Just stating what I feel is a potential problem .

I think it needs to be mentioned that Depending on the brand of ssr there can be a difference in the resistance of the
potentiometer .i have been checking ebay and you can get a (resistance type ssr) for $8.00 or $21 for ssr and heatsink
the thing is some state you need 470-500 ohms and some with just 500 ohm's and i have seen some with a 1 meg ohm rating and then there is the power rating to consider .Just read the specs and understand what your pot requirements are.

should be 470k - 500K ohms ( 470,000 ohms - 500,000 ohms)
